Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

When trying to unmount an internal partition, ie one defined in fstab, palimpsest reports something along the lines of:

Error unmounting: umount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
umount: only root can unmount UUID=b40a9324-52c8-4733-a460-ac5648da5d06 from /g

I would expect palimpsest to trap this error and then prompt for admin privileges and to retry, in the same way it prompts for your password if you ask it to format a drive.

A quickfix is to add a sudo wrapper to the menu entry.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Bug reproducable with HDD installation of oneiric. gnome-disk-utility 3.0.2-1ubuntu1 still gives error message:

Error unmounting: umount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
umount: only root can unmount /dev/mapper/vg-data2 from /mnt/data2

In order to work around this bug, you can run `sudo palimpsest` from a terminal. Unfortunately, most users would have a hard time figuring out that palimpsest is the name of the app. (I did. I had to run check the running processes.)

#3: It's great that root isn't required just to run palimpsest because the app has a lot of useful features that don't require root. (Maybe these are new features that used to be exclusive to gparted?) I think a better quickfix would be to change the error to add "run sudo palimpsest" or to have an option that restarts the program as root. (Unless you mean adding a new launcher.)
