I cannot install new gnome-screensaver themes

I've followed the instructions in:

but I cannot get any new themes installed.

I've removed all the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications/screensavers/,
but the themes persisted, even after reboot. Only after a system update the
themes were deleted. I copied them back, but they don't appear.

Here they mention a workaround,

screensaver configuration is not working as claimed in the faqs.

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. Sorry for that. However I tried to use 'ubuntu-bug' but it was not possible for me to add details to the resulting report, and thus I consider this a better way.
