Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

When I increase the volume above about 75 percent the sound level drops to zero. Sound Preferences, Hardware then shows nothing. (The hardware has disappeared!) The fix is to completely restart the computer. Normally, the Sound Preferences will show the following Hardware on this ASROCK 775 Dual-VSTA motherboard:
VT1708/A [Azalia HDAC] (VIA High Definition Audio Controller) 1 output, 1 input, Analog Stereo Duplex.
This is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, the Lucid LynxUbuntu 10.04 with all updates as of June 14, 2010.
It happens in Totem Movie Player 2.30.2 while playing any music track. (flac)
This does not happen on Ubuntu 9.10.
Thanks.

Hi Bruce,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jeremy,

The change in kernel corrected the problem. Here's what I did:
Install,
     /media/9822-3FAF/linux-image-2.6.35-020635rc3-generic_2.6.35-020635rc3_i386.deb

Here's what uname reports,
barnold@Ubuntu-1004:~$ uname -a
Linux Ubuntu-1004 2.6.35-020635rc3-generic #020635rc3 SMP Sat Jun 12 10:19:32 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
barnold@Ubuntu-1004:~$

I can now move the volume control anywhere that I want. There are no crashes of the sound software.
I hope this is what you wanted to hear.
Bruce
