Could you attach the file /usr/share/emacs23/site-lisp/auctex/CompilationLog to this bug report, please?

The error message appears to mean "cannot overwrite directory" which doesn't IMHO make much sense.

I am sorry, the file and directory are not there anymore.
A couple of days ago I removed the pre-built ubuntu-package and compiled
emacs 23.2.1 from source.
If it helps I could re-install the ubuntu-package, together with auctex,
and give you feedback if the error shows up again. Please advise.

If this can somehow be reproduced then yes please, do attach the compilation log and any other pertinent files. Thank you.

I re-installed Emacs and AucTex using the package manager.
No error anymore, AucTex installed fine.

Thanks.

By the way, I noticed the following message during install:
"The package emacs23-common should be rebuilt with new debhelper to get
trigger support"

And, it also seems that ispell.el and flyspell.el are missing (see lines
131-133 in message text file).

If the original error condition cannot be reproduced and investigated, I guess we will have to close this bug report as Invalid. The problem with dictionaries-common could be worthy of a separate bug report, or you can reopen this bug report if you have additional information.

Please do keep reporting bugs to Ubuntu!
