Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

After wrestling with getting likewise-open to join my domain (joined, unjoined, uninstalled, reinstalled several times), I was able to join my domain successfully. I could login with domain credentials MYDOMAIN\username.

However, It gives me an error getting into GDM:
Could not update ICE authority file /home/likewise-open/MYDOMAIN/username/.ICEauthority
also
Problem with configuration server
(/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)

Any help would be appreciated.

Some things I've tried, per various posts in the forums:

sudo chown UID#:GID# /home/likewise-open/MYDOMAIN/username/.ICEauthority
sudo chmod 0600 ~/.ICEauthority
sudo chmod 755 /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.*

Still can't login graphically to that account. I can login with my local admin user account, so I should be able to make changes from there.

What would happen if I just got rid of my .ICEauthority file? I imagine big time corruption.

Someone on a forum suggested un-installing gdm from a terminal and then reinstalling it. This seems rather drastic and likely to cause problems with many dependencies.

Changed in gdm (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low

I am experiencing a similar problem. Same error messages. Recently upgraded from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS. Although it is an intermittent problem and I cannot pin down why it sometimes works or doesn't work. When getting these error messages none of the menu bars appear. When there's not a problem everything appears to be normal.

The home directory is mounted from a FreeBSD NFS server. Having the lock manager turn off gives a similar problem.

Looking at the permissions of the ~/.ICEauthority file, it is owned by the user and is readable by the user.

Hopefully this does not effect a similar setup at work with a lot more users and desktops.

Exact same error messages seen on two different machines--one upgraded from 9.10 and one installed from scratch. Both use domain logins and NFS-mounted home directories (from Isilon storage, however, not FreeBSD). Already tried removing and purging gdm then reinstalling the package, no dice.

Fortunately, these are the only two Ubuntu systems in our environment. The rest are Red Hat and have no issues with logins or permissions; was hoping to switch all systems away from RH, but this is a huge dealbreaker.

What I finally did to work around this (if I can remember correctly):
I completely deleted my primary domain user's folder that I was concerned with. /home/Domain-Name/username
I re-logged in as that user, allowing the machine to automatically create that users folder again.
I copied/pasted the folders and contents that I needed into that folder and then I was off to the races.

I, then, created a new admin level local user on the machine and just stopped using the original local account. This account still has the problems but I moved all my content over to the new accounts. They work great.

Can confirm the ICEauthority and gconf-sanity-check-2 problem for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx. But now also Nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/user/Desktop, /home/user/.nautilus.

The user is an sudoer when needed and use a .ecryptfs user map.

The user changed the password to 'Don't ask for password on login' with System>Administration/Users and groups. With the next reboot the problem's appears.

An sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart fix the problem. But come back after reboot.

Do not use 'Don't ask for password on login' for now (, if you are sudoer and use an .ecryptfs)!

I get the same ICEauthority and gconf-sanity-check-2 problem for Ubuntu 11.04 after logging in & the worst is that none of the applications open & terminal commands are not working to fix this. the terminal does not even show up in the list, have to use CTRL ALT F1 to open it. The environment has changed from unity to gnome. the only thing I did was change my user account profile from custom to administrator, also removed Nautilus & replaced with Thunar as home folder was not responding. now nothing opens.
