Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

I was scrolling around in Google Earth when the screen suddenly went black. System did not reboot, but shortly the login screen appeared.

I have seen this happen several times on this computer, as well as another computer with an older ATI card and 32 bit processor.

This did not happen with the ATI proprietary driver on 9.10. I do not know if this happens on the ATI proprietary driver under 10.04 because google earth would crash before the globe appeared with that setup (did not dump me back at the login screen).

This is the second time I have attempted to enter this bug. 1st time, I said yes to the request for extra information, waited an hour for 300 MiB to be transfered, then errored out with a "could not connect to database" error.

According to your glxinfo file your RV770 (Radeon HD4850) is not being used:

OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.7.1

affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) → mesa (Ubuntu)

That is hard to believe since the only video card in my system is the Radeon HD4850, and that is the one connected to the monitor.

I am using the Open Source drivers, not the ATI proprietary drivers. They seem to work better with MythTV (no dropped frames and no tearing).

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The information I pasted from your glxinfo file indicates that your RV770 (Radeon HD4850) is not being used for OpenGL rendering, which is a bit odd. It is of course being used for modesetting and framebuffer display.

I had trouble with the proprietary ATI driver that caused google earth to crash, and MythTV Front End to crash when openGL was set for rendering. That is one of the reasons I'm using the open source drivers now.

Thanks Tormod. I know you have some expertise in this area so could you enlighten me as to why you added the RV770 info to the bug title given that Mesa's software rasteriser seems to be being used?
