Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Hi,

I own a Dell XPS M1530 and the default Lucid kernel is unusable because of a bug with the nouveau driver. Basically, it boils down to a bad EDID problem:
Jun 2 11:05:59 wicasa kernel: [ 18.349387] [drm:edid_is_valid] *ERROR* EDID checksum is invalid, remainder is 128

(from /var/log/syslog)

Here are the symptoms and what I tried so far:
- booting on 2.6.32-22-generic yields to a black screen, all I can do is a reboot with ctrl+alt+suppr. X fails to load (according to the logs). The "EDID error" above appears several times in the log.
- setting modeset=0 yields to a kernel panic (blinking caps lock led when reaching the Ubuntu logo during boot). All I can do is a hard reboot. No EDID error in the log, the last message is about loading the driver.
- booting in failsafe mode works well (still with modeset=0). The console is working properly. startx yields to a kernel panic, as above, but failsafeX works (with the vesa driver).
- booting on linux-image-2.6.31-21-generic works fine (of course, there is no nouveau driver). X works with the nv driver, except color depth is limited (to 16 bits?). I've had EDID issues in the past with the proprietary nvidia driver, too (but it is no longer installed).

I can provide logs for most of these situations but please tell me exactly what you need or further test I should perform.

Thank you very much.

I have a similar issue with the nouveau drivers. I have an XPS M1710 and the built-in display is detected properly, but the secondary monitor is not. (The Nvidia binary driver detects it properly). dmesg output is similar, but the invalid edid is even more suspicious looking:

[drm:drm_edid_block_valid] *ERROR* EDID checksum is invalid, remainder is 130
 [drm:drm_edid_block_valid] *ERROR* Raw EDID:

Here is the correct EDID Info for my monitor as detected by the proprietary nvidia driver, hopefully this is useful.

The affected laptop died in the meanwhile, but it turned out this series of Dell
laptops had a lot of hardware defiencies. I think the Linux kernel was not
responsible for this glitch.
