Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

(I think it is not a duplicate of bug #440502)

On Ubuntu 10.04, on which I installed lubuntu-desktop and set by default the lubuntu connection manager.

I want to set back GDM, but gdmsetup does not let me unlock it: the "unlock" button has not effect, even if i launch "sudo gdmsetup".
(i tried also with UbuntuTweak: it does not unlock also)

Below the logs with "gdmsetup" and "sudo gdmsetup":

$ gdmsetup

thank you for your bug report, could you run ck-list-sessions? it seems a lubuntu issue

could you try using "ck-launch-session gdmsetup"

Thank you for your answers.
Strange bug... sometimes restart brings me to Lubuntu login screen, with Lubuntu environnement by default, and sometimes, it automatically connects me to a GNOME session.

Today I was automatically logged to GNOME, and I could unlock the gdmsetup (which was set up on "automatically login on Lubuntu session).

I will try your commands in the following days.

Sorry i can not reproduce any more , now I can unlock gdmsetup.

BUT: it is strange that GDM randomly appears instead of LXDM (if I reboot several times I get alternatively GDM then LXDM then GDM then LXDM ...)

I will fill a new bug for this.

closing the bug since that works now and didn't seem to be a gdm issue but rather a lxdm one

I reopen as I can now reproduce :
I set an autologin with GDM toward Lubuntu session, then I set an autologin with LXDM toward Lubuntu session.
So now I always start directly with Lubuntu session.

Therefore,
- on Lubuntu session, I cannot unlock gdmsetup
- when I unlog, I go to LXDM, then log in a GNOME session, I cannot unlock gdmsetup too

Seems a LXDM bug.

Please find the output of both ck-list-sessions and ck-launch-session gdmsetup.

is the log from a working or non working session?

From a non-working session (where I could not unlock gdmsetup on Lubuntu, then unlogged to LXDM, then logged on Gnome where I could not unlock it too)

This same bug occurs in a freshly installed ubuntu 11.04.

GDM doesn't asks if the default should be changed and gdmsetup stays grey, the unlock button does nothing, no access to the selection.

Further testing shows this bug occurs if gdmsetup is called from another windowmanager (i'm using awesome here, still freedesktop compliant): the privilege escalation program doesn't gets called to unlock the widget.

once unlocked gdm lets one change the default system-wide (for all users), but not for single users, so it is still a question how to do that, since gdm doesn't asks anymore to change the default.

if you know how, thanks in advance for your hints!

the gdmsetup privilege escalation problem is only related to the awesome window manager, not the default gnome or unity.

using gnome as desktop i could set the default session of my user.

so i guess i should put the candle back where it was and mark this bug as expired.

ciao

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

same problem for last 11-12 days.
Also GDM never appears. All console is locked( either ctrl+F1...F10 or ctrl-alt+F1...F10 work ) .
I have to select in GRUB safe mode in order to access ubuntu (with startx).
Tried to make it default through gdmsetup and found is locked.
Tried "gksudo gdmsetup" in order to run in "unlocked" enviroment. Nothing.

Problem solved in my pc.
Used the "startupmanager" which I had installed some time ago and forgot about it. After that, "gdmsetup" unlocks Ok.
