Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

After a fresh boot and relogging in after locking the screen for some time, the xorg takes up too much memory and causes the other applications to be drastically slowed down even on my machine with 2GB RAM. My laptop has Nvidia 8600 M GS graphics card and uses the proprietary driver for the same and the visual effects are enabled to a moderate level

Is it surely a bug in nvidia drivers and not in xorg?

Will try to see if this bug exists when the Desktop effects are disabled.

Does this bug happen after locking the screen, or only after resume from suspend?

I have similar performance issues after resume from suspend, in which Xorg always uses 10-15% of CPU (on a quadcore) and uses more and more memory and the performance of the system as a whole is degraded, resulting in a jerky mouse and slow loading of programs. I didn't have tihs problem under Jaunty. I can include logs, if helpful. This could be an nvidia issue, or an Xorg issue, but it doesn't happen on my system with Intel graphics.

Do we have the same bug?

By the way, this bug definitely does not happen using nouveau drivers and metacity. Also, I am pretty sure it doesn't happen on kernel 2.6.32-21-generic. Can you try this kernel and see if you can reproduce it?

affects: nvidia-drivers-ubuntu → xorg-server

That version is no more supported; please open a new bug report if the actual archive found version also has the same issue.

Changed in nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid
Changed in xorg-server:
status: New → Invalid
