Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm using Lucid and every time after I reboot my laptop, my compiz settings seem to reset. I'll have to then re-configure my effects.

This is what I do when I login every time:

1. Goto System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects [by this time, I wont have any title bar for open windows]
2. Effects will be defaulted to 'None', I'll change that to 'Normal' or 'Extras'. I'll get a message that Ubuntu is searching for available drivers [actually, it shouldn't].
3. The screen flickers and I'll get a popup saying if I want to Use Previous Settings or Keep current settings. I'll opt for using the previous settings which gets me back to 'Normal' but this time with title bars.
4. I'll then set the Effects to 'Extras' & close.
5. Go to System -> Preferences -> CompizConfig Settings Manager & choose my usual effects & close.

Though this workaround is fine for me, it takes 2 -3 minutes to set this up every time I login. Would be nice if the reason for this is found and fixed.

Cheers,
Jeeva

This can happen for a few different reasons I can think of.

1) permissions issue
2) something interfering in startup programs
3) upgrade from 9.10 may have broke it

For 1), make sure your regular user owns everything in ~/.gonf* then set appearance radio button to None then back again
For 2), check your startup programs
For 3), (which btw I think is the most probable even if you didn't upgrade:)

Start compiz
Close all other open windows
Navigate to System>Preferences>Startup Applications> Options tab and click Remember Currently Running Application
Relogin; test

Hope this helps

Thank you for reporting this bug.

Since when do you use Lucid? What did you use before?
Is this a single personal computer where you installed Lucid yourself or do you have some fancy network settings?
Did you just format your HD and install Ubuntu or did you already have another linux distro or ubuntu release installed before? Is your home directory new or did you keek a previous one?
Could you create a new user and test if you have the same problem with this new account? (System -> Administration -> Users and Groups)

Please, after giving this information and doing the test suggested by soreau mark this bug as "New" again.
