ppdev module needed for parallel port, but not documented

Bug Description

hplip needs ppdev module to be inserted in the kernel to work with parallel port printers. The module is, however, neither inserted automatically, nor is it mentioned in the README file for the package. The only place I could find a passing mention was the System Requirements page in the hplip-doc package. It would be really helpful if this requirement were made more prominent.

Just can confirm this issue. I had to load ppdev module to detect any parallel port printers.

This definitely has to be added to README.Debian!

Actually the default init script is already doing this. Can you please
do
 sudo sh -ex /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

and paste the output here? Thanks!

For Edgy or Dapper please remove the lp module from /etc/modules and reboot.
Run lpinfo -v from a terminal after rebooting, your parallel printer should be autodetected without problems now.

Changed in hplip:
assignee: nobody → pascal-devuyst
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

On Feisty CUPS makes sure that the ppdev module is loaded, so for Feisty this problem is solved and it is a duplicate of bug #29050. For Edgy and Dapper please follow Pascal's hint and perhaps open an update request for the released distributions in bug #29050.
