needs Provides: sysvinit

Bug #58731 reported by Matthias Urlichs

upstart (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

ubuntu-minimal depends on sysvinit, which upstart replaces without an appropriate Provides: header.

That makes ubuntu-minimal uninstallable, which (if one blindly removes it) will cause all the packages it has dragged in during upgrades to be removed (if using aptitude), which is not the intended result. ;-)

upstart doesn't provide sysvinit.

It's entirely correct that ubuntu-minimal gets removed, because when you install upstart, you do not have a canon minimal ubuntu installation.

The right solution is to change the dependency in ubuntu-minimal from "sysvinit" to "upstart", which is planned.

Changed in upstart:
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected

Sory, I was being sloppy -- one might argue that upstart-compat-sysv does.

That's not mutually exclusive, but OK.
