Bug Description

Samsung NC10 will not resume from suspend. Originally, I thought that this was related to bug #340014, but after booting with nohdparm and without pmpowersave the problem persists. Steve Langasek told me that I had a separate bug and requested that I post it here.

The following situations result in frozen screen upon attempting to resume the computer:

Battery power, calling for suspend from System > Shut Down...
Battery power, calling for suspend by closing laptop screen
Battery power, calling for suspend by using function key (Fn + Esc)
AC power, calling for suspend by closing laptop screen
AC power, calling for suspend by using function key (Fn + Esc)

Note that calling for suspend by System > Shut Down... while on AC power does not result in the freeze up (95% of the time).

Also note that I am able to duplicate the problem when booting from a Live USB.

I've found that setting lock_suspend in gconf-editor>apps>gnome-power-manager to "off" allows the computer to return to my "pre-suspend" screen after I resume. However, this screen is frozen and does not recognize input from the keyboard or mouse. This is better than returning to a black screen, of course, but equally useless.

"sudo s2ram --force" works reliably with and without the AC cord attached, but I still can't get suspend/resume to work from the menu, power button, Fn + Esc or by closing the laptop screen. Any suggestions from here?

Hi Alexander,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Which is the most recent upstream kernel?

I'm beginning to suspect that this is related to my wireless card or wireless card settings. Occasionally, suspend and resume will work under battery power by closing the lid. When the computer resumes, however, my wifi has been disconnected. This does not happen when I suspend/resume under AC power.

Alexander,
That is an interesting observation. The mainline builds page that i pointed you to should have information on the most current upstream RC kernel.

Thanks!

Updated kernel (to linux-image-2.6.34-999-generic) and did suspend/resume test. Failed suspend by dbus.

On updated kernel (linux-image-2.6.34-999-generic), still failed suspend/resume test (sudo bash /usr/share/checkbox/scripts/suspend_test --full). Computer failed dbus and failed to reawaken itself when necessary. I awoke the computer for the first few tests and then canceled the tests because the computer was not waking itself back up.

Outside of the suspend/resume test, however, the computer is resuming well after the kernel update. Functionally, it works normally (suspends and resumes normally when under AC and battery power) but cannot awaken itself during the suspend/resume test. Here are the test results:

*** TEST 1 -- suspend triggered via dbus message
*** please ensure your AC cord is attached
*** machine will suspend for 20 seconds
*** press return when ready

SUSPEND FAILED, did not go to sleep

*** TEST 2 -- suspend with AC disconnected
*** please ensure your AC cord is detached
*** machine will suspend for 20 seconds
*** press return when ready

*** TEST 3 -- suspend with AC connected
*** please ensure your AC cord is attached
*** machine will suspend for 20 seconds
*** press return when ready

*** TEST 4 -- loss of AC while suspended
*** please remove the AC cord while the machine is suspended
*** machine will suspend for 20 seconds
*** press return when ready

*** TEST 5 -- return of AC while suspended
*** please insert the AC cord while the machine is suspended
*** machine will suspend for 20 seconds
*** press return when ready

*** TEST 6 -- battery drain during suspend
*** calculates overall power drain during a long-term suspend
*** please ensure your AC cord is detached
*** machine will suspend for 20 minutes
*** press return when ready

before: 4800 mWh
after: 4600 mWh
consumed: 200 mW
sleep seconds: 25233 sec
overall usage: 28 mW

*** TEST 7 -- 30 iteration variable delay suspend/resume stress test
*** please ensure your AC cord is attached
*** machine will suspend for 20 seconds
*** NOTE: there will be no further user interaction from this point
*** press return when ready

delay 60 ...
wait for 60 seconds
delay 58 ...
wait for 58 seconds
delay 56 ...
wait for 56 seconds

Will suspend test due to failue to automatically reawaken.
