As a workaround you can run gtick with the command "padsp gtick".
From "man padsp": "padsp starts the specified program and redirects its access to OSS compatible audio devices (/dev/dsp
and auxiliary devices) to a Pulseaudio sound server."
It isn't perfect though - gtick works as normal until you press the stop button, which causes it to crash.

That workaround doesn't work for me. I can hear the sound again but the tick doesn't stay constant - when I move my mouse around or the gtick window the tick lags.

This breaks Mythbuntu usage of TV cards that use need to have audio sent to line in and therefor /dev/dsp.

This also prevents mencoder to capture from old analog TV card.

Seems still broken in 11.04
There is a patch available to configure between OSS and pulseaudio but has not filtered down to us yet. (sorry it's beyond me to patch it)

Gtick uses pulseaudio by default at least since 12.04 and 12.10, so this can be closed, no? Or does it still affect anyone?

It hasn't been an issue going back to at least Precise, and I just re-installed it on Raring with no problems to report.
