Bug Description

I have been searching for help getting my M-Audio sound card to output sound. At the moment all I get is silence. The sound preferences, after much hacking, displays an option under devices to choose an analogue output but there is no listing under the inputs or outputs tab for the analogue input and output that the card has.

I would assume that this card should only have one listing in devices driver and then all the inputs and outputs should be available under input and output tabs in sound preferences. I can not test to see if the digital input/outputs are working as I have no s/pdif audio equipment.

I have tried many of the available fixes but am willing to try more I really need sound to work on this system. On a side not if I select the internal speaker I can get sound from this install but none from my M-Audio soundcard. With some messing about I could get what sounded like a digital signal through the analogue output. It was like a sheet of white noise and playing with the clock speed altered the pitch but never produced legible sound.

I could not get this soundcard running under debian lenny and an little tinkering with squeeze, ubuntu 10.04 and now a sloppy move from ubuntu to xubuntu with a apt-get install xubuntu-desktop and a deletion of the gnome base with a popular un-install command found via the xubuntu site. I have tried to troubleshoot his issue on the alsa irc channel but have not made any progress I would appreciate someone looking in to this. A lot of people seem to have problems getting sound from an audiophile 24/96 card.
