Cannot remove the mail icon from the notification area without removing the volume control

Bug Description
I want to remove the annoying mail icon from my notification area, but the sound volume notification icon is removed with it. And when i remove it, how do it put it back? It's very difficult to find it on the app list. I found it with the name "Indicator Applet", but i was searching for something related to "Volume Control". Took me a while to figure it out, a normal user would NEVER figure it out.
BTW: I don't like the message notification icon because i need two mouse clicks to see the message, instead of one. It's counter-productive.
