Bug Description

I have an Asus P5LD2-VM Motherboard (Intel 945G chiptset) with a built in Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 graphics card (i915 kernel module). It is a fresh install of 6.0.6.1 amd64 with all updates as of Aug. 31 2006.

On logout, restart or shutdown, when in X, the system freezes with a black screen (with some video garbage on screen). The only way out is with a hard reset. This happened with the live CD as well.

Apparently many others, some with different hardware, have the same problem:

Thanks for your help.

Ok, so it looks like this may be a duplicate of bugs 46874 and 30447.

Although here it is happening with the OSS i915/i810 graphics driver combination.

I'm going to try the workaround of disabling the "usplash" that is mentioned in one of the above bug #'s.

I've narrowed the problem down to an oops when rebooting while X is running. This happens even when I reboot from the console by doing CTRL+ALT+F1 first.

Unfortunatly, I cannot capture the oops as it zooms by too quickly and I can no longer scroll up once it has crashed (how can I capture the oops?)

When booted into "recovery mode" I can reboot fine. I've narrowed the problem down to presence of either the i915.ko or drm.ko kernel modules.

This happens both with the 2.6.15-26-amd64-generic and 2.6.15-26-amd64-xeon kernels (this is and EMT_64 system).

If I comment out "Load dri" and the DRI section in xorg.conf, I can avoid loading the i915 and drm kernel modules but unfortunatly the system still crashes on shutdown or logout when X is running.. so it seems to be a more general kernel bug.

Sorry about the report. I thought I had searched the existing bugs thoroughly before posting...

I'll try the workaround mentioned as soon as I get chance to.

Even with the workaround this should not be happening. It's a real showstopper for newbies

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!
