libode1 not working on Lucid Lynx (maybe mismatch with clib versions?)

ODE appears to be not working at all in Lucid. e.g. the following program segfaults:

#include<ode/ode.h>
int main()
{
 dMass mass;
}

this is a fresh install of lucid (with ubuntu studio, netbeans, openinventor, ODE added via synaptic)
I will try rebuilding ODE from source and see if it works.
My collegue suggests that the packaged ODE might have been built with libraries incompatible with the versions on Lucid?

works on yakkety
