Bug Description

Hi

I have recently installed Kubuntu 10.04 LTS with the new nouveau driver. Most things work fine, but sometimes I keep getting thousands of lines in the logs. Lines like these:

I should add that when this happens, my computer almost grinds to a halt. Everything becomes very slow and it feels unresponsive. Moving the mouse becomes very slow. CPU utilization seems low in top though.

Is there any hope this will be fixed soon? Or should I just install the proprietary nvidia driver? (are there other alternatives?)

The Fedora bug for this problem has a patch here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=537065#c53 . I've been running with the patch on my work machine which had the same problem for the past week and no problems with disappearing mouse pointers or "no space" kernel messages. Fedora is now including this patch in their kernel according to the last comment in that bug (however, the last time I checked upstream, they weren't yet).

Please consider applying the patch from the fedora bug to the Ubuntu kernel. This is also a duplicate bug about mouse problems with nouveau which i believe is the same problems, butI can't find the bug right now. If I can, I'll post this there as well.

For the record, the stock maverick kernel on the same box would start showing messages almost immediately, so this patch really does seem to fix the issue. Whether it's the correct fix (seems reasonable enough to me, it just leaves a little more space at the top of a buffer) I leave up to the developers,
