Bug Description

After doing a software suspend ("standby") my soundcard doesn't wake up. Running alsamixer & co works but all players i tested (totem, mplayer, xine) say "can't connect to audiodevice".
In the kernellog I found following line:
[ 2.619148] pnp: Failed to activate device 00:03.
which could propably be my soundcard.

"lspci | grep audio" gives me:
00:0c.0 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies Inc. ICE1712 [Envy24] PCI Multi-Channel I/O Controller (rev 02)

So, who's to blame? The suspend-code? or the audio-driver?

Thanks

I'm using a recent edgy-installation, so kernel-version is now 2.6.17-10-generic and the problem still exists.

I can confirm this. I've got the same problem with this soundcard.

ditto on this end: suspend seems to break sound fairly consistently.

device is:
Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

kernel is:

As a workaround, the patches provided here should help:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/11149/comments/6

They add an option to /etc/default/acpi-support that allows killing all sound applications, unloading all the sound kernel modules, and then re-adding the modules upon resume, and restarting the sound applications.

It's ugly and not ideal, but it has worked well enough for me on Mandriva for the last couple years, which is the origin of the patches.

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task.

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. After suspend sound stops working. To be more clear if I raise PCM to 100% and Master to 100% and put my ear directly next to the speaker on my laptop I can faintly hear the music, so the issue is that the sound is extremely low. My sound card is "Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)" otherwise known as Conexant cx20549 and my laptop is a Toshiba P105-s9337. I added "options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-micsense" to the bottom of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base so this is not the problem and my kernel version is 2.6.27-7.14-generic.

Hi v17al,

I just realized that you have a different sound card than the original bug reporter. Care to actually open a new bug report? If you actually run "ubuntu-bug -p linux" from a Terminal and it should automatically help you file the new report and additionally it will gather and attach important system information to the bug report. If you could also attach your alsa-info.txt file to your new report it would be great. I apologize for any inconvenice this may have caused but appreciate your help. Thanks.
