Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Two monitors are attached, both via DVI-I, the display properties correctly identifies them with their make and model but the 2nd monitor will not power up. Windows can be dragged into the visual area it occupies but they are never visible. Both monitors operate fine under Windows XP-sp3.
Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit.
ATI Radeon x1900 dual head display, Samsung 20" on primary Dell 19" on secondary.
package gnome-control-center, using gnome-display-properties
Expected behavior:- On activating the 2nd monitor it should power up and the image extend onto it.
Actual Behavior:- Workspace area enlarges, windows are able to be dragged into the place the monitor should be but the monitor does not display an image or power up.

Hi Charles,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or Xorg.0.log.old) from after reproducing the issue?

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` too.

looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log
the end of the file seems to indicate a loop as it outputs the data stream about the Dell 19" monitor 8 times then just dies with no log ends message.
In the /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old it is output 9 times but there is a log ends message.

Thanks for the help, once you are accustomed to having two monitors one just is not enough....

An interesting issue in this case is that on boot both monitors are mirroed together. They remain powered up and mirrored until well after the GRUB boot, the secondary monitor goes into power saving mode as the X server starts up.

Is there any reason this bug is still marked as Incomplete? I have submitted all the requested materials. If there is anything further you need please let me know. My research into this matter indicates that multiple people are experiencing the same lack of dual monitor support with various ATI cards.
I have found no way to get both monitors operational.
