heavy display corruptions with KMS and x1400

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

With a Mobility Radeon x1400 and KMS enabled I encounter severe display corruptions. It seems that an application utilizing OpenGL makes this behaviour even worse. The corruptions start about 5 minutes after boot and create thin flickering about 1cm long horizontal lines followed by screen flickering (like an old analogous television with a bad signal; the picture drifts up and down). The latter screen flickering renders X and the console unusable. The corruptions do not show up in a screenshot.

The problem persists with Mainline Kernel 2.6.34 and/or Xorg-Edgers PPA and/or amd64 Ubuntu version.

Possible Fixes:
1. Disabling KMS with "radeon.modeset=0" fixes the display corruptions but... well disables KMS ;-)
2. I recently found out that running "avivotool regset 0x458 0x00000000" also fixes this issue with KMS ENABLED. But that shouldn't be run by any user having a x1400, right?

If you need any further information or additional files, please let me know.

After doing some further investigation, looking into the radeon-driver source etc I found out that this most likely has something to do with PLL. After searching for "pll quirk" (which is what the x1400 needs, imho) I found similiar bugs which I haven't discovered before:
1. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/509273
2. http://<email address hidden>/msg2240533.html

So, in a way: Sorry for the duplicate...

Oh, while we're at it. Off-Topic question: Is there any listing+description of the "radeon" registers?

I had the same issues with the beta of lucid, and then with the final the issues semed to be resolved - up to yesterday: It started with the horizontal white stripes and resulted in an unusable screen. Just like you described it.

Using x1400 in an thinkpad z61m.

I didn't give this bug much attention lately but upgrading to Natty Beta 1 fixed it for me.
