Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase

kmfclient (http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/lucid/man1/kfmclient.1.html) is the "KDE tool for opening URLs from the command line". It is currently (Kubuntu 10.04) included in the Konqueror package. It should be separated out so that people who do not wish to use Konqueror (but another browser) do not have to install it.

kfmclient is only useful for konqueror. It is the only browser that it supports. You probably want something more like kde-open or xdg-open.

Dear Jonathan,

Thanks for looking at this bug report.

It might be the case the kfmclient did only support konqueror in the past (compare http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/hardy/en/man1/kfmclient.1.html to the link I gave in my initial report). However, it does work for me with Firefox: typing "kfmclient openURL http://www.google.com &" in the console opens a new tab with google in Firefox for me. Note that I have set Firefox as the program that handles http(s).

The reason I stumbled upon this issue was that KBibTeX uses kfmclient to open on-line searches for bibliographic data. I did not have Konqueror installed, and I got a message that kfmclient was missing, so I started looking around and found that it was in the konqueror package, which I installed, after which the on-line search worked (opens tabs in Firefox).

Erik

It can be that kfmclient can open pages in other browsers, but it still doesn't change the fact that most of kfmclient's functionality is heavily tied to konqueror. Without konqueror, most of kfmclient's other functions will not work. You may wish to file a wishlist report at the KBibtex bug tracker, asking them to use something less integrated with Konqueror to do the task: https://gna.org/bugs/?group=kbibtex
