Bug Description

lsb_release -rd:
Description: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release: 10.04

Ubuntu crashes, the screen gets black, the mouse pointer is visible but cannot be moved, after a few seconds the system is logged out and the login prompt appears.

I upgraded from 9.x to 10.04 a couple of days ago. The problem occurred soon after the upgrade.

When the problem happened, I was running:

Firefox
Shell
Revelation 0.4.11
Nautilus
Evolution

I also had an active 3G connection to my mobile phone via a USB cable.

The problem happens several times a day; at least five times during a normal working day.

Since the first row in the syslog implied a problem with the screensaver (see below row), I made a test.
May 18 13:36:32 develog-laptop gnome-session[16910]: WARNING: Detected that screensaver has left the bus

In the Screensaver Preferences, I deselected:
- Active screensaver when computer is idle
- Lock screen when screensaver is active

I have not had a crash at all since I made this change. Since I have only been running less than a day without any problems, I will write a comment again tomorrow. This is of course not a permanent fix of the problem but gives some information of what can be wrong.

These two options are still deselected. It seems that the crash only occurs when I am using Firefox at a certain web site (idg.se). Yesterday I was able to reproduce the problem quickly, several times when I was surfing on this web site. Do not know if it could be that this web site is stressing my system more than other web sites have been using so far. Now I can see that something is printed on the screen a couple of seconds after the screen has gone black. Among other things, something about timidity was printed (see date and time: May 20 18:06:50 in the log below). Here follow a new excerpt. Anyone seeing anything suspicious? I should underline that the crash may not have occurred exactly during this excerpt. I will post a new and hopefully more precise log during the day.

Mikael, the screensaver seems not to be related. This unexpected logout's happen to me using Firefox, but I don't think the bug it's related to the browser. I think it's because the "browser or any application" gets slower and slower, almost freeze. My problem is maybe cos I have a small swap. Do you have enough memory and swap?

Mikael Andersson (mikael-develog) wrote :

Yes, there should be enough memory (1 Gbyte) and swap (1,3 Gbyte). Right now the memory usage is around 560 Mbyte and swap usage is around 15 Mbyte.

It is probably not Firefox itself, as you are saying, but some resources it is using, which get stressed. Are you using a 3G connection as well?

I have had a few crashes since last post. This time I succeeded to record the debug print outs from the modem-manager. Since I have not had any crashes when running with the WLAN, I thought it could be interesting to see if the 3G connection could be the problem. Below is the log.

This evening, a new crash occurred. This time I was running with a WLAN connection. The laptop has been running fine for a few hours with Evolution, Firefox and Rhytmbox playing some music. As soon as I started surfing on the web site idg.se, which seem to have triggered all the previous crashes, the crash happened.

I am not sure that my problem has been solved. Last week I googled some more and found the following bug report which seemed related to the one I have filed.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/539772

I thus upgraded a few days ago according to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/539772/comments/29

After that, I have not had any problems. Let us see if my problem is gone.
