Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Encountering an error with a Hash Sum mismatch when downloading and installing compiz-plugins_0.8.4-0ubuntu15_i386.deb during a karmic -> lucid workstation upgrade

This causes the system to drop back to the CLI to a "restored original system state" running karmic.

It sounds like the file got corrupted during download. Could you try removing the file /var/cache/apt/archives/compiz-plugins_1%3a0.8.4-0ubuntu15_i386.deb and then redo the installation process?

I'm having the same problem upgrading from Karmic to Lucid using Update Manager. While downloading packages I get an error dialog saying:

"Could not download the upgrades"

"The upgrade is now aborted. Please check your Internet connection or installation media and try again. All files downloaded so far are kept."

"Failed to fetch http://mirrors.us.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/c/compiz/compiz-plugins_0.8.4-0ubuntu15_i386.deb Hash Sum mismatch"

... and a Cancel button.

The compiz-plugins_1%3a0.8.4-0ubuntu15_i386.deb file you mention above does not exist. It seems it hasn't been downloaded, or has been deleted when the hash check fails. Here are the only compiz* files in the directory:

/var/cache/apt/archives/compiz_1%3a0.8.4-0ubuntu15_all.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/compizconfig-backend-gconf_0.8.4-0ubuntu2_i386.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/compiz-core_1%3a0.8.4-0ubuntu15_i386.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/compiz-fusion-plugins-main_0.8.4-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/compiz-gnome_1%3a0.8.4-0ubuntu15_i386.deb

If I retry the update, I get the same error on the same file. It's the only file missing, preventing the update.

Hmm, odd. Just tried again and the download succeeded. Didn't change anything that I know of. Perhaps a different mirror?

Rick,

Where you using the same mirror (mirrors.us.kernel.org)? If so, that mirror had a broken compiz-plugins package.

I checked and the deb package on the mirror does match the hash sum now.

Yes, I am.

Confirmed. It's working for me now as well. Thank you for the followup.

This failed for me today. Perhaps it had cached a download, and perhaps repeatedly removing the /var/cache/apt/archives and /var/cache/apt/archives/PARTIAL compiz-plugins* files also failed because an intermediate proxy server had cached the bad file. But it failed again until I manually downloaded the file from the oakland.edu server and so I switched to using the oakland.edu server and now upgrade is progressing.
