Encountering an error with a Hash Sum mismatch when downloading and installing compiz-
This causes the system to drop back to the CLI to a "restored original system state" running karmic.

It sounds like the file got corrupted during download. Could you try removing the file /var/cache/ apt/archives/ compiz- plugins_ 1%3a0.8. 4-0ubuntu15_ i386.deb and then redo the installation process?
