Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

In Ubuntu Lucid's Open Office 3.2: on opening a MS .ppt in Impress, I have problems with pictures that were originally created by Excel. Typically one or more bars (on a bar chart) has an extra colour or there are strange boxes round the bars. I have attached a tar.gz containing a sample .ppt & its resultant .odp. Interestingly, when I posted a query about this on Open Office Community Forum, one reply was that on Windows 7 using OO3.2.1, the problem is fixed. I suggest that it would be a good idea to incorporate 003.2.1 into Ubuntu Lucid.

Is this still occurring with OpenOffice 3.2.1 in Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat"?

madbiolgist,

I do not know if it's occurring with OpenOffice 3.2.1 in Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat". I have no intention of ever using another Ubuntu STS (i.e. not long term) as they have always been full of serious bugs: in my view canonical ought to scrap this concept of STS & LTS and go to a yearly release with good stability. Bug is still present in Lucid.

Your experience differs from mine, but OK.

Does the openoffice.org 1:3.2.1-6ubuntu2~10.04.1 package currently available in lucid-proposed fix the issue?

I don't use or intend to use lucid-proposed. This repository seems to me to be likely to have the same problem as STS releases (namely, lack of stability). Please convince me otherwise.

SRU's (-proposed) are handled very conservatively. You can read more about the SRU rationale and process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

lucid-backports, on the other hand, is more likely to be unstable.

If you enable lucid-proposed you don't have to install all the newly available updates, just the one you are interested in (openoffice.org 1:3.2.1-6ubuntu2~10.04.1 in this case). If you run into any problems, or just don't like it, you can disable lucid-proposed and then revert to the previously installed version.

Bear in mind that unless a regression or other problem is found, packages in lucid-proposed will eventually make their way into lucid-updates. So it might be a good idea to test it out now so that if you find a bug the package can be rejected. Otherwise the only way to keep your system as stable as you seem to want it to be would be to never accept any of the updates offered by Update Manager, other than security updates. And you did say in your original description of this bug "I suggest that it would be a good idea to incorporate 003.2.1 into Ubuntu Lucid".

Finally, if your primary concern is maximum stability, you may want to consider switching to Debian.

I've now tried lucid-proposed, just installing openoffice.org 1:3.2.1-6ubuntu2~10.04.1. However, it ggave dependency problems. I rest my case regarding the instability of lucid-proposed!

I use Debian for servers because Ubuntu Server is unstable.

PS this term of stable/unstable is rather euphemistic. It really means usable/unusable respectively.

Thanks for testing. I take it you weren't able to get it installed to the stage where you could determine if it fixed this bug?

If the dependency problems are reproducible it might be worth describing them in a new bug so that the package in it's current form can be rejected, before everybody runs into the same problems.

Correct that I was not able to install OO3.2.1 to stage where I could determine if that fixed bug.

PS I'd be willing to do more testing if there was something in it for me e.g. paid (or other inducement) for testing.

John Rose, this issue is unreproducible in LibreOffice Impress via the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/581605/+attachment/1394154/+files/1.tar.gz && file-roller -h 1.tar.gz && cd 1 && rm 1.odp && unoconv --listener && unoconv -f odp 1.ppt && loimpress -nologo 1.ppt 1.odp

two files look exactly the same. Does that work for you?

[This is an automated message.]
There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.
