Bug Description
If you screw up the xml file /var/lib/
or indeed there was any mistake - it just rewrites it with its best parse.
I'm ok with it rewriting it but it should give some diagnostics to let you know what's going on!
I don't see anything logged anywhere, and there is no /var/log/libvirt entry for libvirt itself.
(I can see an argument that says if it hit things that were unexpected it shouldn't start and rewrite the file, it should tell
you and get you to fix it - but that's not my primary issue).
It might not be a bad idea if it pointed you at:

Debugging that would be best done by setting the log_level in /etc/libvirt/ libvirtd. conf. If there are specific suggestions for improving the log messages that produces, please do raise them upstream.
