Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

Use case: I am a user with some knowledge of IM, but facing empathy for the first time, and I don't know what a "favorite status" is for. (How can I use it? are my favourite statuses stored somewhere? Will other people see my favorite statuses in a special way? and so on). However, there is no documentation about this feature in the help of empathy. This feature should be documented.

If I knew what a favorite status message was for, I would have provided a patch with the requested documentation ;-)

Cheers

I cannot find any favorite status message option in empahty can you please point me to that? In present form in empathy 2.30 every thing is crystal clear for setting custom status and its something that every one can discover very easily

Sorry for being incomplete. When I choose a custom status, a greyed-out star appears close to it. A tool-tip says "Click to make this status a favorite". By experimenting (clicking on the star) I discovered that a "starred" custom status gets put among the selectable statuses. If I un-start that status, it disappears from the ready-made statuses.

However, *before* clicking the star, it was not clear to me what a "favourite status" was for (maybe it will look bold to my friends?, or what?), so I searched into the empathy documentation, and found nothing about it. As a wishlist, it would be nice if the documentation could improved by adding a paragraph about the "favourite statuses", saying something like:

"""
With favourite statuses, you can save the custom statuses you use the most, so that you can easily retrieve them later. In order to add a favourite status, first set a custom status. Then, click on the greyed star that appears close to it. The status is now a "favourite status", meaning it will appear in the list of the custom statuses you can choose from.

If you want to delete a favourite status, select it so that it becomes your current status. Then, click on the star, so that it becomes grayed. The status is now delete from the list.
"""

Or, maybe, the tool-tip could be changed to something like "Click to make this status available in the status list". That is: it was not clear to me that a "favourite" status is a status I use often. At first, the word "favourite" and the star remembered me of the voting system you use in rhythmbox to order your favourite songs (which is *not* the case here :-) )

Thank you for your support.

Referring to comment #2, a sentence could be added to the documentation, and/or the tool-tip could be updated.

The tooltip thing could be reported upstream but I am not sure what documentation means :(

By documentation, I refer to the content shown by the "Help" program that opens when I click the "Help --> Contents" menu in Empathy.

Sure, this "whishlist item" could be reported upstream.

The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME.

It is preferred if you report each bug separately.
