Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

New to reporting bug.

I upgraded from Ubuntu Hardy LTS to Lucid. Then added KDE4 desktop using synaptic package manager but , unable to log-in to KDE as it crashes after showing the plasma desktop. It goes upto first three icons & then reverts back to Ubuntu login screen. There is no problem while logging in with GNOME

Tried again by creating a new user (with admin rights). Same problem.

However when one of the users is logged-in with GNOME, I can switch to a different user WITH KDE desktop.(without logging out the GNOME user),
Following Step taken so far have not yielded any result.
1. Reinstalled all KDE modules (base, workspace , plasma etc.)
2. Performed an upgrade from Kubuntu Lucid alternate CD image.
3. Tried with system restart after every change / re-installation.
4. Tried with safe mode , repair broken packages (no broken packages reported)

System Info:
AMD sempron 2400, Asus Mobo with via KM400 chipset,
1.25 GM DDR RAM, IDE 160 GB HDD , DVD WR
Dual boot windows xp pro & Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with KDE 4.4 added as an additional desktop manager
(using grub),

I was running Kubuntu 9.10 without issues. I upgraded to Lucid 10.04 using the update manager. After the update was completed, I could no longer log into the system using KDE. I can login via GNOME without issue. When I try to login to KDE, the Oxygen panel displays, I see the disk icon then it bounces me back to the login prompt.

I have performed the same steps as above without success. I have also performed the following steps:

- renamed my .kde folder in my home directory hoping that it would fix the problem, no luck!
- ran apt-get install --reinstall and it comes up clean
- ran apt-get install kdebase-workspace, says it is the newest version ( saw this in another post ), comes up as installed

System is AMD 9850 Quad CPU
Mobo: ASUS M3N-HT Deluxe SLI
Graphics: Nvidia 9800GTX+ , 2 cards in SLI mode
Memory: 8GB

Even though the upgrade method was different, the issue appears to be the same. Please let me know what commands to run in order to provide technical details.

Found related bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/572937

I have similar situation as described in this bug, was running on nvidia version 173 and the dist-upgrade installed 195.36.15, it appears that the linkages did not all move from 173 version to 195. If bug 572937 gets addressed, I hope it will fix this.

From what I have read, it seems that I need to remove the nvidia package completely and re-install manually with the latest version from nvidia, as of this writing it is 195.36.24 . I will follow the procedures listed in these posts to see if it fixes my issues:

After upgrading from 9.10 (Karmic) to 10.04 (Lucid), since KDE was not working, I booted into GNOME and checked the hardware drivers installed on my system
System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers

There it showed that I had both Nvidia version 173 installed and Nvidia version 195 installed. Version 195 was selected as active. I figured that, based on reading other posts, the update messed up my nvidia driver configs between the 2 versions.

I followed the steps in this post
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1467074 and manually installed the Nvidia driver 195.36.24 and it worked! I was able to run KDE again!

Synopsis from above post ( Thanks AndyBoy_LV ):

I read somewhere that they changed the way nvidia drivers get installed on Lynx (correct me if i`m wrong), so it took me some time to figure out how to do that. So, here is the guide:

1) Download Newest Nvidia drivers from their website
2) Open module blacklist as admin: (i use gedit for text file editing)

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

3) Add these lines and save:

blacklist vga16fb
blacklist nouveau
blacklist rivafb
blacklist nvidiafb
blacklist rivatv

4) Uninstall any previously installed Nvidia drivers:

sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-*

5) Reboot your computer
6) When an error message pops up saying that Ubuntu cannot load Nvidia drivers, choose Exit to terminal (Exit to console)
7) Login and cd to the directory where you saved your file
Install drivers

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2.run

9) Start GDM

sudo service gdm start
