Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

In the Appearance Preferences -> Customize Theme -> Pointer dialog, mouse pointers like DMZ (White) or DMZ (Black) allow the pointer size to be specified. Lucid is ignoring the setting and always defaults to the smallest size. I've confirmed that the mouse pointer size is getting written to the '/desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/cursor_size' key in gconf-editor correctly; it's just being ignored. Incidentally, Firefox does display the correct pointer size when the mouse pointer is within the bounds of its window. I've confirmed this on two systems, one with an NVidia display and one with an ATI display, so I doubt it has anything to do with display drivers. Also, one of the two systems is a clean install of Lucid, and the other, an upgrade from Karmic.

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Based on your description, it does not sound like Firefox is the cause of this bug, so I'm marking that this report needs to be reassigned.

Yes, I'm not sure why it got assigned as a Firefox issue (that's actually the one place where behavior is as expected). Does it automatically scan the description for hints?

Did you report the bug using Help > Report a Problem... from within Firefox? When that menu is used, apport files a bug against the program that it was launched from.

I found it affects all windows, independent from the program running on a clean 32 bit installation with ATI graphics.
I tried to get ComixCursors-Green-Regular, which was the choice inside windows and infront of the desktop. But it changed to ComixCursors-Black-Large on window borders, window title bars and panels. sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme did not change anything, so I switched off compiz and this did the trick. After reactivating compiz changes were accepted and the pointer displayed the same cursor on window borders as well as inside window boundaries.
I'll try to reproduce that on a clean install on Wednesday. The affected computer is my girlfriend's one and she'll kill me if I try to reproduce the bug. Especially as the same solution was reported not work from another user in the German community
