try sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -f install (do notice if it asks you to remove tons of things).

above fix doesn't work, returns same error message plus

 "Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)"

I've also tried: sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get autoclean and a sudo apt-get autoremove as well as a normal remove and re-install.

anything else I could try?

That's obviously not a bug in apt. The postinst script from empathy-common could not be executed.

Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.
