Lucid incompatible with HP Mini 110 BIOS (F.15)

Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS does not start up well with the F.15 BIOS of HP Mini 110. [This wasn't a problem before and is once again not a problem now that I have reinstalled Karmic.]

The symptom is that if Lucid has been running on either the disk or a UNE stick, attempting to shutdown, hibernate, or suspend leads to a situation in which the computer is likely to wait 6.5 minutes before Lucid shows any signs of running or indeed to hang forever. The effect might be magnified by whether or not the computer was battery-powered when it went down. Note that "restart" seems to work more reliably than the others. Also note that the identity of the image that you are trying to bring up (in the shutdown or crash out of hang case) is irrelevant to the problem. So using a Lucid UNE stick as a live CD and then trying to reboot the installed Karmic exhibits the problem while using a Karmic UNR stick as a live CD and then rebooting the installed Lucid is uneventful.

I tried this with three different USB sticks (though probably two were identical) and two differently-configured installations. I also installed the 2.26.33.3 kernel for Lucid and got the same results. By the way, 6.5 minutes is a pretty consistent value.

I didn't find a way on HP's site to upgrade the BIOS running Linux; on the other hand there is nothing in HP's release notes about the newer ones that suggests this is fixed.

Please run the following command in Lucid which will attach necessary information:

apport-collect 578868

Bear in mind that when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

If you cannot use apport please at least add the following information (pay attention to lspci's additional options):
First run the following commands:
1) uname -a > uname-a.log
2) dmesg > dmesg.log
3) sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
4) cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
then attach the files separately to the bug report (not pasted into comments or tar/zip-ed).

After an agonizing week of trying to understand what was wrong, I now have a working Karmic system but without full restoration. I can't start all this over again to load Lucid on the computer. Unfortunately, I can find no way of saving output from those commands when running the UNE that I can also read back in the Karmic world. So I'm sorry, but I can't provide what you ask for.

It seems to me, however, that those logs show what is happening when the system is working in Linux. The problem occurs when the system is running in the BIOS. Is there some place on disk or in the BIOS that can be accessed to show what the software stored when going down? Somehow that is what is causing the problem.

I have put an lspci in as an attachment, but note that this is from Karmic not Lucid.

Well, I couldn't get that to come back at all. Hung early in the boot process (just a cursor at upper left) regardless what regular thing I did. Finally I convinced it to boot the Karmic UNR stick. When I rebooted from that and chose the disk as the boot device, it resumed from where it left off when I hibernated nearly an hour before. So now I'll send the apport report again.

Final news: I think I was mistaken about it being a kernel bug at all. Replacing GRUB2 with GRUB seems to have solved it. I'll let someone else fight that battle. Thank you for your hard work.

Exact reason found and corrected: see bug #539467. The "SATA Link Power" was being turned off, apparently when there was still disk activity waiting. Applying "lucid-proposed" version of pm-utils-powersave-policy (currently at 0.3.1) resolves the issues about stopping completely.

Note that the issues about starting were resolved by using the Broadcom STA rather than B43 driver. I don't know if there is any other link.

I've quite the same problem: freeze on suspend / shutdown / reboot with an HP Mini 100-3010sf with Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 (fresh install today; with backport + pre-version, same problem before I enabled these sources).

I guess it can be related to the Wi-Fi because I tried a simple thing.
I booted on GDM, hit CTRL+ALT+F1 to display the shell. I then hit the « Wi-Fi » key on the keyboard.

The console thrown 2 lines, and the PC freezed. Nothing is responding since.
