Hi QED314,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 578849

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Downloaded the latest amd64 iso image and did a new install about 3 weeks ago. Update regularly, typically every day. About 1 week ago, this error appeared at boot. Rebooted, error went away. Three days ago, it came back to stay. There is a small difference at the end: instead of "unknown-block (0,0)" I get "unknown wn-block (0,0)".
Used a live cd to boot and reinstall grub. Worked fine for a day. Today the error is back. Machine boots into windoze 7 without a hiccup.

UPDATE: I suspected the grub reinstall getting things to work was a long shot in the first place and having it actually get me going was a fluke, especially when it didn't work a second time. Further investigation revealed the problem was having to manually set the BIOS to DDR3 1600 from the auto detected 1333 (which apparently is pretty standard at the present state of affairs). I corrected that setting and booted up without further ado. Will post if further problems arise.
