network-manager-applet status not updated on use of wireless disable button

My acer-aspire ONE (flash-drive model) has a slide momentary switch to disable/enable the built-in WiFi module.
This, at a hardware level, works correctly.

However, the network-manager-applet systray icon is not updated on its use.
When it is pressed, a XF86WLAN X key event is sent to the current application.

network-manager-applet should intercept this key and recheck the wireless network status.
