Bug Description
Binary package hint: gdm
Machine upgraded from 8.04. 4 user accounts (alan mary ryan brian); machine was configured with timed login to log alan in after 30 seconds.
Machine boots to gdm screen, shows gdm simple greeter screen with machine name.
gdm log has this error message: Unable to find users: no seat-id found
No users show up on the list. "Other..." option is unavailable.
Unable to log in with this screen. Switching to virtual terminal (ctrl-alt-f1, etc.) allows us to log a user in in text mode; have not tested startx while logged in as a normal user. "startx" from recovery console (root login) works.
`pkill -9 gdm` and restarting it with `sudo gdm &` has no effect.

Since this hasn't been triaged: I switched to kdm. I can add more information upon request, but I'm unsure what to add here.
