Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rythmbox usually crashses during startup, but once in the ~10 times does not.

I have a local and a sftp mounted through nautilus library of 28k songs each. (its a copy), after ~13s it crashes.

Dmesg says:
rhythmbox[30503]: segfault at 2e383635 ip 06315c52 sp acafbf10 error 4 in libgvfscommon.so.0.0.0[630b000+14000]

Strace output for the last 2.3k lines is attached

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

My rhythmbox has exactly the same bug on two different laptops: the other is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS desktop and the other Ubuntu 10.04 LTS netbook edition. Both are up-to-date and rather new installs (the netbook is less than one day since I installed it).

The rhythmbox seems to first slow down when it tries to handle tens of thousands of titles on a samba share. Then it completely freezes and finally crashes. There seems to be some variation on how the bug appears. The less powerful laptop seems to crash more easily than the more powerful one.

This is my latest syslog entry:

rhythmbox[16751]: segfault at 3a6e7773 ip 00d5a6c7 sp b19f1f40 error 4 in libgvfscommon.so.0.0.0[d50000+14000]

I've sent a full crash report with apport today.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
