Bug Description

I'm trying to upgrade my Lynx 10.04, but apt-get is stuck. I got to the point where "empathy" and "rhythmbox" need to be uninstalled. I'm dead in the water until I can get this resolved.

I'm trying to uninstall empathy and rhythmbox in my system, which I upgraded a week ago from Koala 9.10 to Lynx 10.04 LTS.
I'm running on a Dell Latitude E6500 with a dual-processor x86_64.
(Many things are broken, and this seems to be one step in getting closer to getting a working system.)

Apt-get (after many updates and upgrades) said to run apt-get -f install.
Here's the output:

This problem with apt-get is preventing me from doing ANY updates to my system.
If you know of a workaround, I would appreciate learning how to proceed.

it means that my kernel janitor scripts reviewed the bug.

I'm moving this to the empathy package as it doesn't appear to be kernel related.

1. I did what you suggested. The results are below.
1a. How do I get 0.12.8-0ubuntu5 instead of 0.12.8-0ubuntu4?
1b. What's causing "subprocess new post-removal script returned error exit status 245"? How can I track down this problem?

2. This bug got filed against "empathy". Where is that bug tracker?

Thanks for your help,
Chelmite

You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
rhythmbox-plugin-cdrecorder: Depends: rhythmbox (= 0.12.8-0ubuntu4) but 0.12.8-0ubuntu5 is to be installed
rhythmbox-plugins: Depends: rhythmbox (= 0.12.8-0ubuntu4) but 0.12.8-0ubuntu5 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

By the way, per your suggestion, I filed this against Empathy (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=620501). They said:

This finger pointing isn't getting my system working. It's been a month since I attempted to upgrade to 10.04, and I still haven't received any useful help or any indication that anyone is looking into this problem. I've been a Unix user since the early 80's, but I've only recently switched to Ubuntu (Koala, a few months ago). This upgrade is the most painful one I've ever been through.

If there is somewhere else I should look for help, please let me know.

This bug is against apt-*, which is failing to remove several broken packages and get my system usable again.

Did I mention that this problem is happening on a dual 64-bit Intel system?

Have you added any third-party applications to your system? Do you have "proposed" enabled in the sources? Either of these could cause this issue, even though the things may not seem even remotely connected.

It's been 4 months since I submitted this "show-stopper" bug, with very little advice, help, guidance, or hints other than the "reinstall".

I removed Ubuntu and installed Fedora 13, which is working.
I abandoned Ubuntu for lack of useful response from bug reporting (which, you can see, is detailed), and news groups.
I need my computer so I can do my job. My computer cannot be "dead in the water" for a week, much less 4 months.
