upgrade to 10.04 LTS doesn't display greeter

After upgrading from 9.10 Koala to 10.04 Lynx LTS, I get a hazy pink splash screen, but no login prompt.
I have to open a console, log in as root, set DISPLAY :0.0; xhost +
Open another console, log in as me, and run xfce4-panel
Open console F7 (graphics display) and I get some functionality, but most things are broken after this upgrade.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 577116

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS was completely unusable. I had to use a console to log in, start X, use another console to log in as me, start some panels...Then firefox, thunderbird, vmware, openoffice wouldn't work for lack of a library or the wrong version of a library.

After a month of waiting for any kind of help, and virtually no response to bug reports, I've switched to Fedora. (OpenSuSE 11.3 wouldn't work either.) Fedora is working, and so am I.
