3) Has installed under 9.10, 9.40, 8.10; did not install under 10.04

Looks like dkms failed to build the driver:

Hmm, not sure but looks like a bug in the compiler itself. Forwarding to dkms for additional verification.

What did you do to end up working around it? Perhaps just uninstalling/reinstalling would kick it into working. In which case maybe there's nothing that can be diagnosed from this...

That was eight months ago and before the 10.10 upgrade. I THINK what I did was download another .iso, burned it onto another CD, and did another install from scratch.

Yeah I would tend to agree bryce. Since it's working now i'll close out the bug.
