Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

was right near the end of upgrading to Kubuntu 10.04 and got this error message:

"Could not install the upgrades
The upgrade is now aborted... Please report this bug against 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade in the bug report. E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)"

I am unable to view the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade - dolphin is reporting that it "Could not start process Unable to create io-slave:
klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_file'."

Additionally I had an error come up in the middle of the upgrade process to do with Java. This may be to do with issues I was having installing some java file I had been instructed to install while using Karmic previously.

And also, in case it's relevant, it didn't seem to accept my password at the beginning of the upgrade process (after three attempts I'm pretty sure I got it right). Then it went ahead with the upgrade anyway...

Apologies if this info is excessive or lacking.
And thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Without the files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' we cannot investigate the problem you're experiencing, could you please try from a liveCD ? Thanks in advance.
