Text artifacts (squares over letters)

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a Desktop Computer (Pentium 4 2.80GHz, Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]) and I am experiencing some weird artifacts in the text (see attached image).

This may not really be an xorg-server bug, but until more is known, this is a start.

There's a lot of information that would be necessary to debug this missing, such as your graphics card, driver versions, and other hardware information. Please run "apport-collect 575785" to allow apport (automatic bug reporting software) to gather information on this bug and submit it to launchpad. Only general system information and logfiles should be collected, your personal files will not be sent.

When I have run that a dialog showed the message "No additional information collected" and back on the terminal "Package xorg-server not installed and no hook available, ignoring".

As for the hardware details, I have attached the output of "lshw -html".

Anyhow it seems the problem disappeared, I am not seeing any artifacts anymore. Maybe some update after the installation fixed it.

The problem is not disappeared, I saw the artifacts again.

I don't know whether it's related but I have also noticed when I was in terminal the 'e' caracter was replaced by a '_' in the file listing, in the file content and in the command prompt. I moved the terminal to another desktop and the 'e' appeared again.
