Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Some compiz effects, like pulling or dragging wobbly windows produce very rough, unappealing edges. This is very obvious, for example, when pulling on a maximized window, as it produces rough lines.

See this link for example images of what it looks like:

I would be curious to hear from anyone on this list whether they have experienced this too. Perhaps you don't really use compiz and wobbly windows in particular so much? The effect is very noticeable as well if you drag a window along slowly - you see these white pixels between the window's menu bar and its contents.

On Karmic Koala it worked for me without problems although I only have an Intel GMA graphic on board chip and very limited ressources.
On my PC (AMD 3,4Ghz, 6GB Ram, Nvidia GTS 250, latest original Nvidia drivers) I have had this problem since Ubuntu 9.10 and didn't find a solution yet.

by the way. It's the same problem with the expo plugin. It doesn't look fluent on my PC, but it does on my notebook.

Hello Bevor, I have this issue everywhere. Perhaps you should look at the images in this link to confirm that we are talking about the same thing:

Yes, we are talking about the same. Meanwhile I found out that this annoying look is already present when I just use the nv drivers instead of the nvidia drivers. (It's a fresh installation, so I've never installed any nvidia or 3D drivers yet). I doubt this is just a compiz problem. Maybe this is some kind of x window problem? If this is just a compiz bug, why should I have the same behaviour then the standard driver without 3D effects too?

I wonder. Possibly no effort was made to anti-alias the borders around the windows? I can't say, because I don't have such in-depth knowledge.

Maybe the basic x window problem is some kind of a tearing problem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_tearing) while this compiz effect could be some kind of an inherited error.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

The gap should be fixable at least. Rough edges at the side can't be fixed unless compiz gets FSAA support or similar.

So fix the gap already. :P It's really annoying because it happens on default animations as well. What an eyesore.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. The compiz program that we currently use in Ubuntu is a C++ re-write of the original compiz and was announced the 4th July 2010. Therefore, the bugs that were reported before that date, will be marked as "Won't Fix" as they probably exist in the original program which is not stored in launchpad. All the supported Ubuntu releases use the C++ version of compiz since April 2015.
