The extra whitespace is there on purpose (by design). However, there may be a more accessible way to achieve this visual result.

Hi, I'm trying to fix this by marking the separator row as separator in the TreeView, according to the documentation.

The only problem I see, is that, without proper theming, the whitespace is replaced by a horizontal line.

What do you think?

Hey Alex! Thanks very much, this is a nice fix! It does work quite well to fix the problem. The only issue that I see with it is, as you point out, it has the side-effect of adding a visible separator line after the History item in the viewswitcher (see attached screenshot). As you mentioned on IRC, we could potentially theme this, but we'll need gtk3 (http://osdir.com/ml/commits.gnome/2011-03/msg07535.html) so this will not be an option until after Natty.

We should also keep in mind that the added line would require a UI freeze exception at this point for Natty.

mpt, when you have a moment, please take a look at the attached screenshot (or try Alex's branch at lp:~alexeftimie/software-center/software-center-fix-whitespace-viewswitcher) and let us know whether you think the visible line is acceptable. Thanks!

Thanks for the contribution, but I think that having no separator at all is better than having a visible separator.

Also, there shouldn't be a separator of *any* sort after "History", except when "In Progress" is also present. Otherwise there's nothing for it to be separating. :-)

Hey again Alex, so actually, mpt mentions it and I tend to agree that there really seems to be little advantage in having the separator at all for the "In Progress" item in the viewswitcher. If you'd like to make a branch removing the separator, I think that would be a fine fix for this problem. Let me know if that works for you.

Thanks again!
Gary

Hi! Thanks for your bug report. As you may be aware, the upcoming release of Ubuntu 11.10 will feature a redesigned software-center. The bug you describe is no longer present in recent development versions of software-center, so I'll close this bug report. Please continue to report any bugs you may find. Thanks again for your help!

(There are many a11y issues which we are aware of in the new interface, but this specific issue is no longer relevant.)
