Bug Description

Link this bug to 480765, which describes suspend problem in Karmic. After upgrade to Lucid, suspend completes and failure occurs in resume. Same machine.
I think apport supplied all the necessary information about hardware, drivers, etc.

ProblemType: KernelOops
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
Package: linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic 2.6.32-21.32
Regression: No
Reproducible: Yes
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-21.32-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2
Uname: Linux 2.6.32-21-generic i686
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21.
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from resuming properly. The resume processing hung very near the end and will have appeared to have completed normally.

Jeremy,
In the next few days I will try to install the pre-compiled upstream kernel on this machine. I had instructions somewhere. Do you have the url for info on that? Is there any risk of messing up my computer?

David,
It is likely that my script will hit this bug today, but the link is https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds.

Jeremy,

Per instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds,

I installed:
Index of /~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-next/current
linux-image-2.6.34-996-generic_2.6.34-996.201005071007_i386.deb 07-May-2010 12:09 30M

I can boot, but I get a terminal. I can log in, but I don't know what to do next. I don't know how to start suspend-to-ram, or to start a GUI interface. Normally, Fn-F2 will start suspend-to-ram, but it does nothing in this case.

For test to be valid, I guess Gnome and all the graphical stuff, network connection, has to be running.

Hi David,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 575482

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Description: initiate suspend from top panel menu. Screen goes blank and computer fan quieter, not off. How to resume? On a notebook, this would be open the lid, or pres the start button, or Fn-F2, which is also labeled suspend on this computer (and does initiate suspend). Nothing works, so I force shut-down.

Then...
I ran == apport-collect -p linux 575482

Would the latest dev release be a 10.10 alpha when there is one? Don't know if I can try this without cleaning out my computer. This is not a test computer.

Re: upstream kernel, see comment on 2010-05-07, please advise. I admit, I didn't try all the options, but if you give me some specifics, I'll try it.

Importance? If no one else is complaining, then I guess it's not important. One thing Windows seems to do is suspend.
