I am having this problem too. I am also using 10.04 - 64 bit. Never had this problem with previous versions of ubuntu including 9.10

My movie also does not play in totem anymore, but it does play in vlc and mplayer. Totem tries to install the 'bad set' but than still can not play the movie. My movie was made with ffmpeg using mpeg4 encoding and an avi container.

guessed conclusion:
ffmpeg plugin for gstreamer is broken?

work around:
convert the movie to different format using on the commandline
$ffmpeg -i mymovie.avi mynewmovie.mpg

Than insert that in ooffice impress and it plays. (if it doesn't play it first in totem, to make sure the right codec is installed).

Does installing the following packages help resolve the problem: gstreamer0.10-plugins-base, gstreamer0.10-plugins-good, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

If so then we probably need integration with KDE's media subsystem or else have to install gstreamer to provide media support for OOo under KDE.

Roman, this might be an area to improve KDE integration if you are interested, but it may be somewhat complex, I am not sure how hard it would be to have OOo use the KDE media subsystem instead of gstreamer.

it did not for me. But deleting my ~/.gstreamer-10.0 folder actually fixed this.

Still a problem in Kubuntu Maverick - because OpenOffice doesn't display a nice error message and you have to watch for these errors in .xsession-errors:

Furthermore: OpenOffice gets really slow and sluggy while adding and changing such an video :(
