Bug Description

Ubuntu 10.04
Dell Latitude D505

Trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Latitude D505. Ran a self-check on the CD and no errors were found.

I tried the following:

1. Booted from CD and pressed ESC on the purple screen with the two icons at the bottom of the screen.
2. I was prompted to select a language and I selected "English"
3. Usual options appeared, I selected "Install Ubuntu"
4. I pressed ESC to look at the background messages and noted the following text on the screen:

(process:300): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
stdin: error 0

5. Installation proceeded but after a time I got unrecognizable characters on the screen and then a black screen
6. Computer did not reboot but stayed powered on with a black screen. Computer is unresponsive.

I repeated this process and set the boot options to acpi=off and noapic but got the same result.

Yep, absolutely the same thing happened to me, but the only difference I have been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on ThinkPad G41.

With Dell Latitude D505 same result:
after booting from the i386 desktop boot CD (downloaded today 5/5 in the morning) and doing nothing but wait:
- the Ubuntu boot logo starts up
- then a flicker and the screen gets black
- Alt-Ctrl F1 up to Alt-Ctrl F12 does not change to a text console => no debug output
- Alt-Ctrl Backspace does not show anything
- Alt-Ctrl-Del does not work either

 How to proceed?

- I try the text based i386 alternate installer now.

Addition to earlier comment from me (D505 installation with i386 desktop installer):

And with the alternate installer the installation works fine BUT: after reboot, the X server doesn't work apparently => blank screen, no reaction on key combinations like listed in my previous comment.

After booting the machine with the Ubuntu 9.10 live CD, I find the /var/lib/Xorg.0.log empty :-(

With Ubuntu 9.10 live CD, however, everything is fine!

I will stick with 9.10 on that PC for now.

Yep. Pretty much the same problem I am having. I am using a CF-30 Panasonic Toughbook. 2GB RAM, 1.8GHz Intel Centrino Duo.

I tried re-downloading, re-burning to different CD, tried burning from different computer, tried booting it from USB, etc etc.

It prompts me for language, of course I select English. Then I down arror to install. After that.... I get a blinking curser on the top left of the screen. Several seconds after that the screen goes black and the system is non-responsive.

:-/ I'd like to use this. Right now I am in Afghanistan and it is too taxing to keep downloading the ISO over and over.

Guess I am going to have to wait for my SuSE DVD set to get here from the states. :-(

I have a Dell Latitude d510 and the same thing happen to me. I had the same problem with my dell desktop at work using the live disk. I am rather new to Linux and not very computer savvy so I am not sure what do next. I really disappoints me that if this is a wide spread problem for dell computers. If you heard good things about Ubuntu and you gave it shot but it just would not load on you computer, why would you ever come back. I hope this is a small problem and not one that effects one of the biggest computer makers in the U.S. Maybe they should have longer spans between new versions to make sure they all work before they roll them out. Just a idea.

Same thing happened to me;

I upgraded my D505 running 9.10 (perfectly) to 10.04 on reboot the laptop hung on a black screen once the splash screen had displayed.
I downloaded the ISO of the 10.04 and it does the same thing whether trying to install or just run the live CD.

Looks like i'm going to have to revert to 9.10 until you've fixed this issue.

Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Latitude 505 DOES work with kernels up to 2.6.32-20.
Starting with .21 and now .22 the xserver can not get a screen(?) if started in failsave mode.

Moreover, but a different bug, it has 6 broken pipe issues. It can not play video. The system crashes.

Perhaps related?

I have successfully used option A to install 10.04 (2.6.32.21) on a Dell D505. I didn't research this to find the bug, but it must be tracked in another # dealing with the Intel 855GM graphics chipset and KMS (and likely other Intel graphics chipsets?).

First I tested it using the Live CD then rebooted and installed from the CD supplying the i915.modeset=1 parameter at boot time. Once installed, I rebooted again, supplied the boot-time parameter again and then once on the desktop made the permanent change using Terminal.
