Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

lucid updated

till yesterday i've not had issues to boot without xorg.conf file. The latest update-manager update seem to have changed the process: booting today i'm first having lot of actifacts then freeze before gdm. Trying recovery mode and test with all video mode on boot line always drop me with the command line, startx fail and complaint about drm things and is unable to use "nv" or "fbdev" or "vesa" (see xorg.0.log.old below)

i've removing/purging then reinstalling the packages, reconfigured them , but no way.

But if xorg.conf is recreated (tweak of xorg.conf.failsafe), then lucid boot as expected.

the problem was existing before i've installed the latest nvidia packages from x-swatt ppa, so nothing to do with the "mismach warnings" logged.

You seem to have the nvidia binary drivers installed - and they were installed for your Xorg.0.log.old, too. Did you install them deliberately? If so, did you install them using System→Administration→Hardware Drivers, or via another method?

The nvidia binary drivers won't work without an xorg.conf. The other problem appears to be that you don't appear to have the vesa or fbdev drivers installed. They should be installed by default - did you deliberately remove them?

the nvidia-current driver is installed with synaptic, no driver from nvidia site, only genuine lucid packages or x-swat ones.

i never use extra drivers, only nvidia-current, nvidia-current-modaliases, nvidia-common and nvidia-settings.
its the first time that i see such warnings logged about fbdev or vesa, your comments make sense and i install them again to be able to boot on fallback.
