Today's update prevents me from getting into gnome

Bug Description

When I turned on the computer this morning, there was a notice in Ubuntu of an upgrade. I allowed my system to be upgraded. Now, after restarting my computer, instead of getting into gnome I am told that my system is not configured properly. It then puts me in text mode.

How do I get gnome back?

In order to send this message I am using a different operating system from Ubuntu.

The response to this problem was that it had already been solved in 57153. I went there and carried out the first step:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-Oubuntu10.4.
The response was: Version 1:1.0.2-Oubuntu10.4 for xserver-xorg-core not found.

Is there any way to undo today's update? If not, it would be easier to reinstall Ubuntu from my disk but I would lose bookmarks and files.
