Bug Description

Hi, Filing a bug as this is regressive behaviour from 9.10.

Suspend-Resume worked fine on my Dell Studio 1555 in 9.10 (apart from the odd resume leading to thrashing, which is apparently a known issue - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/391628 ).

Resume now comes back to blank screen. I have feeling that this was a bug that was apparent at the early stages of 9.10 where the resume is actually succesful - apart from the screen turning back on. This was fixed in some upgrade of 9.10. I now see it in lucid.

For instance, I cannot see an error in the awake cycle of /var/log/pm-suspend.log yet all I have is a blank screen.

When I first installed lucid laptop would not suspend at all - as outlined in this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/526354 I am therefore running kernel / fglrx / pm-utils from lucid-proposed.

Suspend/Resume is key functionality and while I recognise there is little that can be done without dropping fglrx (which has it's own issues) - this was working and now it's not.

Also on Dell Studio 1555. Radeon 4500. fglrx driver in use,
2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:28:05 UTC 2010

After fix for this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/linux/+bug/526354 has been committed and released, laptop properly goes into standby mode. However when trying to resume screen stays black (no backlight even). Sysrq keys work (the only way to reboot apart from pressing and holding power button).
Switching to open driver fixes the problem, but due to the lack of PM with open driver, fan is blowing at full speed at most times ), with temps much higher than fglrx. (+noise).
Sad, beacuse the open driver works better than fglrx (no tearing, better handling compiz).
Still I have to cope with the lack of suspen/resume which is very inconvenient but still better than overheating and reducing battery life.

I can confirm this. Dell Studio 1555 here on the new kernel and pm-utils from proposed. No error in log, yet only a black screen.

I have the same issue on my Dell Studio 1555 laptop. It seems that resume from suspend became broken after I've installed updates for Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday. One of this updates was a new kernel version.

I can confirm this as well on my Dell Inspiron 5100. There were no issues previous to 10.04, but now the screen remains black after resuming, and I am forced to hard reboot.

fglrx

This behavior began after kernel update. With previous kernel (2.6.32-21), system would not suspend and only locked-screen as described in this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pm-utils/+bug/573938.

Suspend and resume worked in Karmic.

My wife and I have matching Studio 1555 laptops. We both started getting this issue as soon as we upgraded to 10.04. Hope it gets fixed soon. This worked fine in 9.10.

I also have the same issue on my Dell Inspiron 8500 with ATI Radeon video card. Tried setting radeon.modeset=0 and/or modeset=0 on boot options but that locks the machine after a few minutes.

Also tried pm-suspend with various options, all to no avail.

With dell studio 1555 and the standard repo 64-bit kernel i found latest version of the ati driver released these days (10.5) solves the problem.
Download it from the official ati/amd website and try if that works.
Changelog of ati driver also states:
"Resuming from sleep no longer causes the display number overlay to become corrupted"

With a studio 1537, it also fixed with the 10.5 drivers.

I have a Lenovo T500 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 and stock 64bit kernel. I had the same problem (resume ok in karmic, but blank screen in Lucid). The new 10.5 ati driver does not fix the problem.
