Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

No further information is supplied by the update manager on why the update is canceled. After downloading the packages, installation seems to run without problems until the status bar shows 99%, then it is said that the updates couldn't be installed and that the system might have been rendered useless. And it will try a system rescue now... fingers crossed...

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to this bug report as separate attachments? Thanks in advance.

BTW:
After sending the initial message, I clicked on 'system rescue' which resulted in ... nothing. The window froze and at some point I decided to reboot the system.
On the next boot, KDE wouldn't load (prompt "Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation." and abort), but I could still work with either console or Gnome. In the end (and after some emotional ups and downs) I found out that it was my nvidia-driver, since the kernel had also been updated and the driver needed a re-compilation.

soooo, right now, everything seems to work fine. I don't notice much difference to karmic, however.

Thank you in any case for your efforts!

Cheers,
Derek

Thanks for your report.

The relevant error is

I'm affecting this report to tripwire.

Regarding your problem with the nvidia driver, the upgrade seemed to run correclty. I don't know why it had to recompile it again.

Thank you for the analysis. I don't really understand why the update-manager would panic and want to undo the installation, being basically finished, if it's a minor problem.
Another (really unimportant) oddity after my upgrade is that the kubuntu boot-screen (prior to login) looks rather EGA-like, might be a persistent graphics problem.
Even though the nvidia-issue is off-topic here, I wanted to mention that I always recompiled my driver after upgrading the kernel, eventually I found a script on the net so that kubuntu would to it automatically during shut-down - apparently it didn't work this time and it this possibility didn't cross my mind at once.
